Mike Mora, Director
Mike has been the Director of Cardinal Baseball Camp since 2002. He is returning to Greenwich High School for his 14th year as head coach and his 16th season on the GHS baseball staff. Certified in special education and physical education, and Health Education, Mike is in his 15th year as a teacher with the Greenwich Public Schools. He was chosen as the FCIAC Baseball Coach and Greenwich Time Coach of the Year in 2004, and FCIAC Baseball Coach of the Year again in 2010 and 2012. During the 2011 Season, the GHS Baseball Program received the Umpire’s Sportsmanship Award. In 2012, the GHS Varsity team went 20-0 in the regular season, and the league honored Mike as the FCIAC’s Spring Sports Coach of the Year. He was the Assistant Baseball Coach at Manhattan College (Division I) for two years, while he studying for his Master’s Degree.
Playing career: GHS class of 1990 All-FCIAC and All-State honors in football and baseball, GHS Baseball Captain 1989 & 1990. University of Vermont (Division I) class of 1994: selected as All-New England Division I player 1993 & 1994. UVM Baseball team Captain and MVP 1994. Inducted into UVM Hall of Fame in 2008.
Professional experience: Played six years of minor league ball, with the Lancaster Scouts (1994), Albany Diamond Dogs (1995-1997), Adirondack Lumberjacks (1998), and Quebec Les Capitales (1999).
Charles has been with Cardinal Baseball Camp for the last two years. He is also in his 2nd year as Head Baseball Coach for Central Middle School. Charles has played baseball at both the high school and college level, and his energy and enthusiasm are contagious. He brings his love of baseball as well as all sports to his position as a Physical Education teacher for the Greenwich Public Schools. His is currently teaching a Glenville Elementary.
Nick has been with Cardinal Baseball Camp for eleven years. A former standout at Cheshire High School, he played shortstop and pitcher. Nick went on to play for four years at University of Massachusetts (Division I), where his pitching earned him a place in the record books for the most saves. Coach Skirkanich was the GHS Junior Varsity Head Coach for three years and is currently teaching math at GHS. His pitching experience makes him the perfect pitching coach for all ages.
Joe has been a valuable member of many coaching staffs in Greenwich and New Canaan for over 30 years. He has coached lacrosse, hockey, football, track, and basketball at the high school level. Joe taught physical education at Eastern Junior High School from 1980-1988 where he was a three-season coach each year. He was the Connecticut Assistant Coach of the Year for football in 2002 and the AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year that same year. Coach Vrtiak has been with Cardinal Baseball Camp for eight years and is a valuable member of our staff who can teach the fundamental of baseball at any age level. He is an “old school” coach who can bring out confidence in any child and is willing to put in the time and effort to help others improve their skills.
John, a former linebacker for the New York Jets, has been a member of the Cardinal Baseball Camp staff for five years. He has taught fourth grade in Darien for sixteen years and is currently at Tokeneke Elementary School. John’s coaching experience includes five years with the GYFL (Cos Cob Crushers), seven years with Norwalk Youth Football, nine years Cal Ripken Major and Minor League baseball (ages 9 – 12), six years Rookie baseball (ages 7 – 8), four years Cos Cob T-ball (ages 4 – 6), four years GBA, one year Norwalk Biddy Basketball, and five years with Greenwich Parks and Recreation soccer. This past fall he coached varsity football at Greenwich High School. His experience and energy make him a valued member of our staff, and he can work well with all age groups. John is passionate about sports, but knows how important it is for kids to have fun while playing. His positive energy comes through in all that he does.
